Why is the high crime rate in Tulsa, OK such a well kept secret?

My new neighbors from Maryland actually thought they could leave their doors unlocked and their cars unlocked! I told them about all the people that had been murdered recently in just the few blocks here and they thought I was sh*tting them. They said they moved here because they wanted a "safer place to raise their children." I'm still rolling about this one.
