What is the type of elementary school that doesn't have grades?

I had a friend who went to an elementary school in Tulsa, oklahoma that didn't have any homework or grades at all. It was supposed to be an alternative type of education that helped the kids learn at their own pace. I've been looking but can't find it or anything like it?
