My car broke down wjile driving and now wont start?

96 caddy with a lt1 v8 died while driving. it turns over but wont start. i bought a code reader but nothing is coming up, it just shows 0. i can hear the fuel circut energize when key is turned on and smell gas when its cranked. Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?
