Big ugly back bug in kitchen?

Hello, I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Well tonight I was in the kitchen making a snack, when my cat started meowing at something at the wall. I looked up at a gross thing, at first it looked like a dark spitball. The I got closer and it was a jet black bug, pretty fat and gross. I took a stick and knocked it down and it scurried away behind some boxes, I removed them about to kill it and it scurries behind the fridge. Please help, I hate it. I don't want that thing in the kitchen, I can't stand spiders, beetles, flies, etc. What was it and can I get rid of it?
